New members information
Brooklands Photographic Society
About us . . . . .
Brooklands Photographic Society was founded in 1968 as Reckitts Photographic Society and met weekly
at the Francis Reckitt Centre in Dansom Lane in Hull. In 1990 the Society, along with other Reckitts sponsored clubs, moved to the Reckitts Sport and Recreation Ground on Chamberlain Road in Hull. The links with Reckitts ended in 2000
when the Recreation Ground was sold, at which time the society changed its name to Brooklands Photographic Society. In 2005 the
Society moved to a new venue at he Church Hall at Sutton Methodist Church, the first meeting being
held there on 6th March 2005. The Society continues to meet every Tuesday evening (7.30pm) at the same venue in Sutton.
The aims of the Society are:
- to promote the enjoyment of photography amongst all members
- to assist all members to gain skills in all aspects of photography
- to provide varied and interesting weekly programmes of events for members
- to use members’ skills for the benefit of local organisations in the Hull area
- to develop further links with the local community
Brooklands Photographic Society is affiliated to the Yorkshire Photographic Union (Y.P.U.)
and the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (P.A.G.B.).
The Society continues to attract and welcome photographers of all ages and abilities.
Our club website is full of information and photographs and is updated regularly. There is a
continuing record of what club members have been involved with and/or recent work they have been preparing. The Society has an active
Facebook account which is updated almost daily with news, details of events and photographs.
What we offer . . . .
Weekly programme:
Our varied weekly programme includes a wide range of subjects within photography
and of interest to photographers of all abilities and interests.
Practical tuition sessions in the syllabus include studio portraiture, digital manipulation
and audio-visual presentations. More experienced members willingly provide advice,
guidance and encouragement to new photographers. New members particularly appreciate the friendliness of Society members and their willingness
to provide help and support whenever needed.
The programme includes internal competitions spread throughout the year, comprising
prints and projected images, as well as a separate annual competition for prints only. The rules for these competitions are available on the
website. In addition we participate in inter-club competition s with other camera clubs in the area: these competitions give our members opportunities
to welcome members of otherclubs to our venue in Sutton and also to visit other
photographic clubs. Occasional outside guest speakers are invited to give presentations; recent speakers have
included Steve Race on wildlife and bird photography.
Members participate in outdoor photo-shoots during the summer months in and around the
East Riding. Occasional day trips are arranged to destinations further away.
Other activities:
The Society is often asked by various organisations to provide photographers for events in
the area. Recent events we have covered in 2022 are theatre show publicity work , local football tournaments and some charity events.
Members of Brooklands often present audio visual shows for charities and local organisations in the area. Recent shows have been
presented to Alzheimer’s Society Memory Cafes
and local social clubs. All funds raised are donated to charity.
The society has an annual exhibition of members work at the Hull History Centre which is open to the public and shows the work of the society in over 120 prints each year.
The Society has its own studio lights and backdrops and runs a separate Portrait Group
meets bi monthly on a night suited to its members’.
This group is self-financing and members pay an additional charge.
Our expectations of members . . . . .
All members are expected to be aware of and abide by the rules of the Society (available
on the website).
Members are expected to:
- assist in setting out and putting away chairs and equipment at weekly meetings
- assist in preparing refreshments at weekly meetings
- remain quiet and behaving respectfully when guest presenters and/or judges are speaking
- respect all members, irrespective of ability, and showing courtesy to guests at all times.
Finally – and above all – we want all our members will enjoy their photography.
Hello,
Is there an email address for me to message someone about paid opportunities for photographers in Yorkshire, which may be of interest to your members?
Kind regards,
Rebecca.
